Currency:

Euros (about €1.4 to £stg) although you may see some prices in the former Irish Punts shown in £s.

Phones:
Best to buy a phone card, readily available from most shops. To call the UK you will need to dial 0044 then your number minus the first ‘0’.

Bank:
There is a Bank of Ireland in Oughterard, with an ATM facility. Counter facilities, including Bureau de Change, open approximately from 10am until 4pm.

Chemist:
In the centre of Oughterard.

Doctors:
Health Centre next to sports ground on the right hand side as you approach the town from the cottage – best to take a completed E111 to obtain free treatment and medicines, where appropriate.

Hospital:
 Nearest one is in Galway City.

Electricity:
Same voltage and connectors as in the UK

Driving:
The same side as the UK, although the speed limits are slightly lower and the traffic travels slower.

Water:
Very safe to drink local tap water.

Airports:
 Nearest one is in Galway, a regional airport but now offering daily flights to & from Luton. Shannon, near Limerick, is about an hour and a quarter away, Dublin about two and a quarter hours.

Car Hire:
Best to book through your airline company, if not, then go into Galway City

Events:
These are seasonal but if you are lucky enough to be here when they are on, keep a look out for Galway Racing, Clarinbridge Oyster Festival, Championship fishing, Gaelic Football, Hurling, Rugby Soccer and Galway Greyhound races are every Tuesday and Friday evenings starting at 8.15pm.
