Pubs:

8 in the town plus the ‘Connemara Gateway’ across from the cottage.
All pubs do good restaurant and bar food serving drink until late.

 

Eating Out:

White Gables, Moy Cullen (7 miles towards Galway). Said to be the best restaurant in Connemara – you must book beforehand!
McDonagh’s Fish Restaurant and takeaway, Galway City centre, near the Spanish Arch – possibly the best Fish & Chips in the world !
Moran’s Oyster Cottage, Clarinbridge (5 miles south of Galway towards Limerick) – world famous for it’s oysters and seafood.
Donnelly’s, Barna (4 miles along from Salthill) – brilliant surroundings service and food.
The Boat, Oughterard – great food and drink, all Sky TV channels, very friendly service that stays open till late!

Places of interest:

Galway City centre – great place which offers quiet situations as well as extremely lively ones for those that want it ! Excellent art gallery and antiques/collectables shop named An Gailearai Beag in Flood Street – full details held in Welcome Brochure.
Ashford Castle – superb castle with great golf course in it’s own stunning grounds.
Cong – very picturesque village, setting for the famous ‘Quiet Man’ film starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara.
Westport – very quaint town just over the border in County Mayo.
Clifden – a nice place made famous by the Wright Brothers landing there in the first transatlantic flight.

Kylemore Abbey – fantastic gothic country house with superb gardens.

Connemara National Park – Oughterard is the start of it but there is also so much more to see including mountains, loughs, sea and coastal routes, forests, etc.

Golf:

Oughterard Golf Club – next to cottage.
Pitch & Putt : same again.
Many various courses in 25 mile radius, including 7 championship ones.

Fishing:

Lough Corrib – about ½ mile behind the cottage with some of the best fishing in all of Ireland.
Many other river and sea fishing opportunities – see enclosed brochures.

Walks:

So many to choose from – best to go to the tourist office and see all of the ones which they recommend, depending on the time you want to spend and your keenness / fitness !
A really nice short walk is down to the Lough via the road right next to the cottage.

Drives:

Once again, you can drive down the road next to the cottage and go partly around the Lough.

Take a drive all the way around the Lough – go through Oughterard toward Maam Cross, then towards Cong, Headford, into Galway and back to Oughterard.
You can drive out of Oughterard towards Clifden on the N59 and just explore the wilds of the Connemara National Park at your leisure.
For a slightly longer journey, drive to the Cliffs of Moher – a fantastic journey with breathtaking views at the end of it – route explained in one of the brochures which you will find on arrival.

Beaches:

Dog Bay, near Clifden – one of the best beaches in Ireland and very quiet.
Starting from Salthill, all the way along the coast – Silver Strand is particularly nice and only about 4 miles away from Salthill.
